Government As Savior

by Pat Pending (8/13/01)

1.          Recent news reports have pointed out that the agency charged with protecting the quality of ground water in Kentucky is not doing its job.  Mine waste and raw sewage are allowed to enter our streams and our ground water, despite the fact that we have people on the government’s payroll who are supposed to protect us from these types of discharges.

2.          Recent news reports have pointed out that child protection agencies are not protecting children.  First the children are abused by their parents, and then they are abused by the state agencies who are supposed to be protecting them, either through neglect or through active abuse.

3.          Recent news reports have pointed out that the people charged with overseeing the financing of elections were themselves large contributors to the governor’s campaigns – something like the fox guarding the henhouse.

4.          Recent news reports have pointed out that the people on the state payroll charged with overseeing mine safety are not doing their jobs properly, and miners continue to be at risk for black lung disease and other mine-related injuries.

5.          Recent news reports have pointed out that the government’s nuclear plant at Paducah has been emitting large amounts of toxic nuclear contamination, causing serious illness and death, and only after decades of fighting have victims begun to receive compensation for their injuries.

6.          Recent news reports say that we need to establish new government planning and zoning commissions to protect us from smelly hog farms and chicken farms and to prevent people from building trailer parks next door to million dollar homes.  The reports recognize that many people are opposed to this, even referring to it as a “communist” approach, but they say the people need to be “re-educated”.  It should be noted that the city of Houston, which has no zoning, does not have any serious problems with smelly farms or trailer parks adversely affecting residential areas.  On what basis do people believe that government, after screwing up the five tasks described above, can be trusted with planning and zoning?  Isn’t blind faith a wonderful thing?
