Still Dumping on the Scouts
"Here's the latest from the wackos who govern Berkeley, Calif.: A
group of
Boy and Girl Scouts from Berkeley's sister city of Sakai, Japan, were
supposed to visit Berkeley City Hall, the 'ceremonial highlight' of their
week-long visit, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. But Kriss
Worthington, a gay member of the Berkeley City Council, objected,
because--surprise, surprise--of the Boy Scouts of America's
constitutionally protected ban on open homosexuals. Just one
problem: As the Chronicle notes, 'Japanese scouts have no policy against
gays.' But Mayor Shirley Dean capitulated to Worthington's demands anyway
and moved the ceremony to a secret location."

So Much for "Bipartisanship"
"In the House so far in the Bush era, the three biggest votes have
been on
the tax cut, patients' rights and energy. Of the 210 Democrats in
the House, just three voted with Mr. Bush on all three. And one of
them, James Traficant of Ohio, is so estranged from his party that he
barely qualifies as a Democrat."

Finally, Some GOP Strategic Hardball
"A prominent Republican couple helped put Green Party candidates on
the
ballot in two important elections, including one that will decide the
balance of power in the Washington state Legislature. Democrats and
Green Party activists claim the couple promoted the Green Party candidates
to help Republicans get elected. Stan Shore, a longtime GOP
strategist, organized a convention and helped pay the filing fee for Young
S. Han, 18, to run for a House seat from Snohomish County. Shore also
transferred $250 to Han's campaign bank account to help him pay the filing
fee, Han said. Shore's wife, Leslie Donovan, a former Republican
staff member, helped persuade Michael Jepson, a 21-year-old
computer-systems operator, to run for King County Council and offered to
pay his filing fee, Jepson said."

Above the Law
"Labor unions have spent million of dollars of workers' dues on
election-year ads and get-out-the-vote drives while reporting no taxable
political expenses to the IRS, a review of union and government documents
shows. ... AP gathered the tax forms of several major unions dating to
1996.
None of the tax forms showed political expenses.
"AP also reviewed thousands of pages of internal union documents
gathered by the Federal Election Commission during a four-year
investigation of union
activities. ... The documents, which otherwise would not be public, detail
how tens of millions of dollars in workers' dues were spent on activities
designed to defeat Republicans or elect labor-friendly Democrats in 1996.
The union have continued their political activities since 1996, but the
same
richly detailed documents for subsequent years are not public."

Entitlement Mentality
"The group founded by Martin Luther King Jr. at the dawn of the
modern civil
rights movement said Monday that its agenda for a new century would
include
seeking reparations for slavery and ending racial profiling. ... 'America
owes us a debt,' Chicago Alderman Dorothy Tillman said in a panel on
reparations. 'We built this country on our backs - black labor,
white
wealth.'"

Gun-Grabber Unmasked
"The pro-gun site KeepAndBearArms.com comes up with a hilarious
example of antigun bias: CBSNews.com ran a story yesterday on a California
Supreme Court ruling that threw out a lawsuit against the maker of the
TEC-DC9, a gun that was used in a 1993 mass murder in San Francisco and
that, according to the plaintiffs, is 'marketed to criminals.'
Accompanying the CBS piece is a close-up photo of the gun. KABA.com
unearths the original, uncropped photo, and it turns out the man holding
the gun is none other than New York's senior senator, Chuck Schumer.
Schumer is known among Second Amendment types as a gun grabber; we didn't
know he wanted to grab guns so he could fire them."

Roadrunner Surely Put 'Em Up to It
"Robert Wright and John Wood, both 18 and from Corpus Christi,
appeared in
federal district court on July 13th and pled guilty to charges of
attempting
to take wildlife and possession of alcohol by a minor. On April 29th,
rangers found the two men parked on the beach (Padre Island, Texas) with
fishing poles baited with deer meat. It was determined that they were
fishing for coyotes - that is, waiting for a coyote to eat the bait, at
which point they would reel the animal in as it fought to get away. Wright
was fined $550; Wood was fined $750 and required to attend ten Alcoholics
Anonymous meetings. Both men were banned from the park for two years,
prohibited from possessing Texas state hunting licenses for a year, and
required to attend a hunter safety course. The fishing poles were
forfeited;
a handgun that Wright had in his possession will be returned after two
years."
