Denounces Senator Schumer's Call for Government Meddling in the High Tech
Sector--
As U.S. Senator Charles Schumer called for Congressional hearings and
possible legislative action to punish software maker Microsoft over the
impending release of a new product, the 335,000-member National Taxpayers
Union (NTU) today criticized the New York lawmaker for "pursuing
corporate welfare over consumer well-being."
"The political timing of Senator Schumer's announcement could not be
more blatant, or ill-advised," stated NTU President John Berthoud.
"Once again,
big government is being called in not on behalf of consumers, but
Microsoft's competitors -- in this case Kodak and AOL/Time Warner. For a
Senator who has railed against Congress's penchant for 'corporate
welfare,' Chuck Schumer should be able to recognize this important
difference."
