**NTU
Praises Settlement Between New Mexico & Microsoft**
On the heels of New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid's announcement
of her state's settlement in the Microsoft antitrust case, the
335,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU) today urged other states'
legal officials to follow her ³promising and praiseworthy lead" in
ending
the "economically destructive pursuit of high-tech innovation."
"In April of 2000, a few 'hard-liners' among the 19 state Attorneys
General involved in the Microsoft suit stood in the way of a reasonable
settlement
of the case and helped to cause calamity for taxpayers and shareholders
alike," said NTU President John Berthoud. "New Mexico's sensible
action has given the remaining 18 state officials a second chance to save
face as well as avoid further economic harm."
