Groups Speak Out Against Kyoto Protocol--
As United Nations and other officials gathered in Bonn this week to
discuss implementation of the controversial Kyoto Climate Change Protocol,
a diverse coalition of citizen organizations representing millions of
consumers and taxpayers around the world today issued a joint statement
urging leaders to avoid the rush to ratify costly new restrictions,
"pending a much greater review of the facts and alternative policy
courses." A total of 13 consumer and taxpayer organizations
from 9 nations signed the open letter, which was sent to UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan, Environmental Programme Executive Director Klaus
Topfer, and Kyoto Conference of Parties (COP-6) President Jan Pronk.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the leaders of all countries
represented by the signatories, comprising Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium,
Denmark, Germany, India, Slovokia, the United Kingdom, and the United
States.
