Has Anyone Thanked George Bush For The Drop In Gasoline Prices?

by Guillermo Camoriano (7-16-01)

Our family recently returned from vacation and found that the price of gasoline had dropped dramatically while we were gone.  Instead of $1.80 per gallon, we saw prices on the order of $1.20 per gallon for regular gas.  Wow!  What happened?

We have heard lots of stories in the news about President Bush being “in bed” with “big oil”, and his refusal to put caps on prices being the cause of our suffering, because he wanted to line the pockets of his friends.  While we were suffering, the President did nothing, smugly telling us to weather the storm, and telling us that anything the government did to try to control prices would only make matters worse in the long run.  He was accused of being uncaring, uncompassionate, etc.

But he was right!  Bravo, Mr. President!  You did nothing, and look how much better off we are!  By allowing the market to work, prices have dropped dramatically.  The result of your inaction is much better than the non-improvement we saw when our former president dipped into the strategic petroleum reserve to show that he “cared” about us.  And it is certainly much better than the brown-outs Governor Davis brought to California by showing how caring and compassionate he was.

So, do we see a pattern here?  When politicians are uncaring and uncompassionate and do nothing, we are better off, and when politicians are caring and compassionate and take lots of action to show it, they create huge problems for us.  Maybe (we can only hope) this will start a new and highly beneficial trend!
