Local Winery worth a Visit

by George Baumler

Jefferson County residents are fortunate to have a winery in their own backyard.  Broad Run Vineyards, located on Broad Run Road, offers much more than just fine wines.  The vintner, Jerry Kushner, and his wife Marilynn, offer a Saturday wine tasting as well as a great location for an intimate picnic lunch or casual meeting over a glass of fine wine.

Jerry is a “retired” gentleman of infinite ingenuity with the drive and foresight that men half his age envy.  His vineyard now covers 25 acres and shows signs of growing even larger.  The “experts” all told him that he couldn’t grow grapes in Kentucky, but Jerry proved them wrong by growing not only grapes but producing quality wines as well.  Jerry is proud of his accomplishments and home made power implements he invented to help tend the vines.  Jerry is now planning to build a large wine cellar and processing building to handle the ever-increasing volume of quality wines he produces.

Broad Run Vineyards welcomes visitors on Saturdays, but the Kushners prefer to be called in advance just in case there is already a large party at the tasting room.  He also holds a couple of events at the winery each year, and your visit could be inconvenient at those times.  If you’d like to try some locally produced wines (Broad Run Vineyards produces Kentucky’s only estate bottled wines.) or would just like to have a picnic in the country one Saturday, give Broad Run Vineyards a call.  The Phone number is (502) 231-0372.  Call them soon, and set up a visit on a balmy Saturday afternoon.  You’ll be glad you did.

Directions:

Get on the Gene Snyder and take the Billtown Road exit.  Go away from town on Billtown road,  drive until you reach the stop sign at Seatonville Road, turn right on to Seatonville Road, proceed until you see a curve ahead put your left blinker on and turn on to Broad Run Road drive about 7 miles.  There are some signs but not many.  The vineyard is on the left hand side of the road. There is a sign but it is very easy to miss.
