the recent report from the National Academy of Sciences
on global warming. (06/01)
http://www.rppi.org/rr103.html

Time-of-day electricity pricing

School buses and diesel fuel
----------
by Daland R. Juberg
"Contrary to the claims of the activist group Natural
Resources Defense Council, there is no scientific
validity to fears that diesel exhaust emissions from
school buses pose a cancer risk to schoolchildren." This
report examines the issue in-depth. It is available in
Adobe PDF. (06/01)
http://www.acsh.org/publications/reports/school_buses.html

NEWS FLASH: Fat people are unhealthy!
----------
Under the "DUH" heading: A Rand Corporation study just
released has found that obesity is associated with
higher rates of chronic medical conditions and with
worse physical health-related quality of life than are
lifetime smoking, problem drinking or poverty. The study
is published in the current issue of "Public Health," a
British journal. (06/07/01)

Endangered Species Act puts people on the back burner
----------
The Endangered Species Act tries to protect America's
plants and animals, but often at the expense of people.
That leaves farmers and other supplicants at the mercy
of the "God Squad" -- a group of seven officials that
has the power to overrule the law in certain instances.
(06/11/01)
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,26839,00.html

Backlash against Maryland's 'smart growth'
----------
Land use restrictions that basically require people to work
their land as farms without recourse to alternative uses
have sparked a grassroots property rights movement in
Maryland,setting locals against state-level urban
planners. Similar uprisings are spreading across the
country. (06/11/01)
http://www.csmonitor.com/durable/2001/06/11/p3s1.htm

Virtual bucket brigade supports farmers
----------
Two judges' denial of irrigation water to farmers in
northern California has inspired a weekly newspapers'
campaign of support for the locals who are locked in a
battle with authorities over the needs of agriculture
vs. two species of fish. (06/06/01)
http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=23130

Suit filed against fish and wildlife service
----------
Attorneys from the Sacramento-based Pacific Legal
Foundation today filed a lawsuit charging the federal
Fish and Wildlife Service with bungling the process for
determining the endangered Alameda whipsnake's critical
habitat, unlawfully restricting the use of large parcels
of private property slated for desperately needed
residential development in the East Bay. (HTML & PDF
formats.) (06/07/01)
http://www.pacificlegal.org/press_releases/pr-whipsnake.htm

California mandates healthy schoolchildren
----------
California lawmakers have voted to limit fat and sugar
content in most public school foods. The proposal would
also, among other things: limit drinks to 12-ounce sizes
(except milk and bottled water), ban jumbo-size entrees
and require fruits and vegetables at all school snack
bars and stores. Elementary schools could only serve
water, milk and fruit juice. (06/05/01)

_20010604_amended_sen.html

UNDP administrator calls for acceleration of 'sustainable development' plans
----------
Over the past 50 years, 2/3 of the world's agricultural
lands have been degraded, 75% of major marine fish
stocks are either depleted or close to depletion, and
much of the world faces water shortages resulting from
over-extraction and pollution, said the head of the UN
Development Programme in a statement to mark World
Environment Day. He called for more "programmes" to fix
this. (06/08/01)
http://www.europaworld.org/issue38/undpadministratorsc

all8601.htm

Eco-terrorist attacks prompt federal action
----------
With a series of terrorist attacks, the far extreme of the
environmental movement is becoming ever more violent --
giving the federal government an excuse to take action
with a newly-proposed law to crack down more harshly on
terrorism against scientists. (06/08/01)
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,26682,00.html

Bush voices doubt on global warming causes
----------
Before heading off to Europe, President Bush acknowledged
that debate continues over the causes of climate change
and whether human activity plays a significant role. He
also criticized the draconian Kyoto global warming
treaty that would place severe limits on industrial
activity. (06/12/01)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/politics/A5338

6-2001Jun11.html

Hydropower stirs renewed debate
----------
When it comes to renewable energy resources, as demanded by
environmentalists, hydropower features prominently, but
damming rivers raises green hackles for reasons of its
own. (06/12/01)
http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,44389,00.html

Pew Charitable Trust not a stickler for cause-and-effect statistics
----------
by David Murray

must be a public-health bonanza." (5/28/01)
http://www.stats.org/statswork/healthtrack.htm

Environmental protection and economic growth
----------
by Lawrence W. Reed
"Economic prosperity -- rooted in private property, free

driver of environmental improvement, not top-down
bureaucratic mandates." (06/05/01)
http://www.mackinac.org/3471

The President's energy plan -- a step in the right direction
----------
by Charli E. Coon J.D.
President Bush's energy proposals will ensure that the US
has an adequate, affordable and environmentally
responsible energy supply, but the plan should "be
strengthened by omitting subsidies and tax credits that
would achieve outcomes an unfettered competitive market
would otherwise produce." (06/07/01)
http://www.heritage.org/library/execmemo/em751.html

Russia's lower legislative house approves nuclear waste imports
----------
by Sergei Ivashko
The lower house of the Russian parliament, the State Duma,
has passed a law allowing the import of nuclear waste to
Russia. The state promises to build a new processing
plant, but the prospect for it seems doubtful to
experts. (06/06/01)
http://www.gazeta.ru/2001/06/06/DumaApproves.shtml

Economics 101 or California Gov. Gray Davis
----------
by Michael Giorgino
"President Bush wants to get government out of the way,
unleashing the limitless potential of American business
to increase supply in pursuit of private profits.
Governor Davis wants to place a noose around the necks
of energy producers, expecting them to provide power at
the point of a gun." (06/08/01)
