THIS WEEK'S LINKS

1-----1-----1

Oliver Del Signore, writer for Backwoods Home Magazine, http://www.backwoodshome.com explores the unintended consequences of the school lunch program in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The Alliance's motto, courtesy of Max Victor Belz, is "I don't want my children to be fed or clothed by the state, but I would prefer that to their
being educated by the state." Sadly, all three are
happening in today's public schools.

2-----2-----2

The Cato Institute continues to advocate false reform for
public education. Their current push is for tax credits,
known around the Alliance as stealth vouchers. In this
article, they propose that tax credits be given for
donations to non profit scholarship funds(why non profit,
a government designation?), but of course leave out
the unintended consequences of the sure to follow government regulation of these funds and government control of private schools via such tax credits. May we suggest that Cato's scholars research the federal take over of higher education in the United States and how this was accomplished through the GI Bill, federal loan guarantees and research grants (i.e. college vouchers and scholarships)?

3-----3-----3

It appears that the California State Department of Education allows flagrant violations of the education code. Read about the Santa Rosa High School "Week of Diversity."

4-----4-----4

More on the zero tolerance follies and another reason why the state should never run the schools. Columnist Steve Chapman shows how the state uses the control it has over its captive charges to inure them to tyranny under the guise of protection.

EduAbsurdity: Teach those hardened criminal a lesson they'll never forget. Is this what we want our schools to be doing?

From the article: "Corrections officer Allan E. Lucas Jr....said that shortly before the [student] group from Evans came into the jail, he overheard other officers saying they had been told to "straighten up" the boys. He said it was unclear who had given them that directive."

FINAL THOUGHT

Review articles on what has been happening [with homeschoolers] and naturally enough you will find critics. You will also find they are having to eat their words as these disciplined, self-sacrificing parents do what public schools could not do even if they shook off their bureaucratic fetters and resistance to change: tailor lessons to individual talents and enthusiasms, inculcate cherished values and strengthen family life.
