--Taxpayers Win as Congress Passes Tax Cut Bill
Without "Triggers" Scheme--
(Alexandria, VA) -- After weeks of dueling over details, the House and
Senate passed a tax relief package without the irresponsible "Trigger
Resolution" thanks in large part to an anti-trigger effort led by the
335,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU).
"The tax-cut trigger was just a gimmick intended to stop legitimate
tax relief," pointed out NTU Director of Congressional Relations Eric
Schlecht.
"It is naive to think that Congress would exercise self-restraint
when it comes to spending the budget surplus currently accumulating in
Washington."
Under the proposed "trigger" scheme, taxes would be lowered only
if Congress
did not spend the surplus, a highly unlikely scenario. Congress has
already
spent a whopping $83 billion above and beyond the "budget caps"
it created
in 1997. And since 1998, when a strong economy finally eliminated federal
deficits, there has been a 16% increase in total discretionary spending,
and
a 20% increase in non-defense discretionary spending.
