Donna Walker Mancini Fired For Political Activity

Should a woman lose her livelihood just because she chooses to participate in the political process?

Donna Walker Mancini, Libertarian candidate for Congress in the 3rd District in the 2000 election, has been fired from her position as a dietitian for Jefferson County solely because she exercised her Constitutional right to run for political office.

The basis for firing Ms. Mancini is a Jefferson County Regulation that prohibits county employees from running for political office.  However, the county has not applied this regulation equally to its other employees.  For example, George Unseld served both as a county employee and as a Louisville Alderman for an extended period of time.  Furthermore, the county regulation does not even apply to Ms. Mancini (whose position is entirely federally funded), due to amendments to the Federal Hatch Act in the 1990’s.

Ms. Mancini was fired at the Highview Health Clinic at the Jefferson County Gov’t Center, 7201 Outer Loop, on Friday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m.
