On This Memorial Day, Let’s Consider Who Are the
Political Left and Right – And Which Side Would America’s Founders
Have Supported?

What is the
difference between today’s political left and right?
The
political left wants to control your economic life.
It wants to take a large chunk of your income by force and use it
“to help the poor and downtrodden.”
As it turns out, the lefties really give the money to their friends
to buy votes.
The
political right also wants to control your economic life.
It wants to take a large chunk of your income by force and use it
“to improve the economy.” As
it turns out, the righties give the money to their friends to buy votes.
Hmmm!
Not much difference here!
The left
claims to be for free speech, but then it proceeds to try to stamp out any
speech that is not “politically correct.”
The right claims to be for free trade, but then it passes all kinds
of laws to protect its friends from having to compete in the free market.
The left
wants you to be free to engage in any kind of lifestyle you want, except
that it will punish those whose lifestyles are successful and reward those
whose lifestyles are unsuccessful. (i.e.
forced money for AIDS research, forced money to rehabilitate druggies) Not
much freedom there.
The right
wants to take a preemptive strike against unsuccessful lifestyles by
preventing you from being free enough to screw up in the first place (i.e.
the war on drugs). Not much
freedom there.
So, it seems
the differences between the political left and right are very small
indeed. Both sides want to
use force to control your money and your activities.
Neither side wants to treat you as an adult who can be trusted to
be responsible for himself, because that would reduce their power over
you. Both sides strongly
support the nanny state, the only difference being who will be your nanny.
Is this what
our founders and following generations fought and died for?
So we could go to the ballot box at election time and decide which
set of nannies (or “ninnies”)
should control our lives?
On this
Memorial Day, maybe we should try to remember the principles on which this
country was founded. Maybe we
should remember what made America great and what previous generations
fought and died to defend. (Hint:
It was not the nanny state.)
