--New Polling Shows Americans Support More Tax
Relief Than Congressional Compromisers--
(Alexandria, VA) -- Lawmakers and White House officials who've hinted at
scaling back President Bush's tax cut are badly misreading public opinion,
according to survey results released today by the 300,000 member National
Taxpayers Union (NTU).
"These results prove what our members have been saying all along:
Americans want and need significant tax relief, at least as much as
President Bush proposed and far more than the Senatešs whittled down
plan," said NTU President John Berthoud.
Based on 1,004 interviews conducted from April 23 to April 25, Rasmussen
Research found that:
o 85% of respondents think the government should use one quarter or more
of the surplus for tax relief;
o 48% said they think half of more of the surplus should be used for tax
relief; o By a 2 to 1 margin (49.7% to 27.6%), respondents said that
holding the
line on spending to no more than the rate of inflation was important, even
if it came at the expense of funding a project in their community.
