Pitching In to Avert an Environmental Disaster
"Perhaps you also saw the story. (I)n Australia, a delivery truck
carrying
24,000 cans of beer overturned and fell into a river. The potential for
environmental degradation was enormous. But, then, from out of nowhere,
dozens of volunteers showed up to dive into the river to remove the cargo.
Some of these citizens just dove in, grabbing as many cans as possible
from
the truck before the beer could start leeching into the stream and doing
who
knows what to the species - endangered and non-endangered - natural to
that
habitat. One anonymous hero came in his scuba gear, and reportedly
salvaged
400 cans. You know, it is times like this, tragedies, when people put
aside
their selfishness and petty jealousies, and simply respond to the
need."
- Clifford Thiess, former Republican Liberty Caucus chairman, 4/20/01

Repeal 16: An Idea Who's Time Has Come
"Congressman Ron Paul recently introduced a bold constitutional
amendment designed to radically reform our tax system. The 16th Amendment,
passed in 1913, allowed the federal government to do what the Supreme
Court had always ruled unconstitutional: levy a direct income tax on
individuals. The 'Liberty Amendment' (HJR 45) repeals the 16th Amendment,
paving the way for real change in the way government collects and spends
our tax dollars. 'The income tax has given government a claim on our
lives,' Paul stated. 'It has enabled government to expand far beyond its
proper limits, invade our privacy, and penalize our every endeavor. The
Founding Fathers never
intended an income tax, and they certainly would be dismayed to know that
Americans today give more than a third of their income to the federal
government.'"

Adding Insult to Injury
"When the 24 crewmen of the United States' EP-3 spy plane made their
emergency landing on Hainan Island on April 1, they didn't have Chinese
entry visas. Before the crew was allowed to leave, each member was slapped
with a $60-per-day fine for the 11 days that they were held captive.
That's
the standard fine for any foreigner who overstays a Chinese visit. The
grand
total came to roughly $16,000, paid by the U.S. Embassy. That's in
addition
to the $80 million value of the EP-3E spy plane that Beijing is still
holding."
- Peter Roff, UPI's "Capital Comment," 5/3/01

Storm Clouds Forming Over Judicial Appointments
"If the (Senate) Democratic caucus holds together...the judiciary
battle will be bloodier than the tax and budget fights. It will begin next
week when the president sends up several dozen nominees. There will be
strong clashes over more than a few lower-court appointments; any
subsequent Supreme Court openings will assure a titanic struggle."
- Wall Street Journal columnist Al Hunt, 5/3/01

Ah ... Ain't Bipartisanship Grand?
"For years, Democrats have talked about a vacancy crisis in the
federal
judiciary. In their drive to confirm Bill Clinton's nominees, it was a
constant refrain heard in nearly every speech or floor statement. But
Clinton is no longer appointing judges, and while vacancies have gone up,
Senate Democrats have done more than merely fall silent -- they are
talking openly of filibustering nominations...before the President has
presented a single judicial nominee."
- John Nowacki, Free Congress Foundation, 5/3/01

Heckling from the "Hell No, We Won't Go" Crowd
"This week, (Newsweek reporter Gregory) Vistica finally presents his
sensational story (the Bob Kerrey SEAL raid in Vietnam) of events long ago
in print, followed by Dan Rather on television. But neither was on that
op;
neither has been a combat grunt. Vistica never served; Rather did have a
go
at becoming a Marine but never completed boot camp. As far as I'm
concerned, neither is qualified to pass judgment on soldiers and sailors.
Matter of fact, neither of these frequent military bashers is fit to shine
Kerrey's one jungle boot - the other having been left behind in Vietnam
with his foot in it while he bravely answered his country's call."
- Columnist David Hackworth, the most decorated American officer in the
Vietnam War (www.hackworth.com)

Another Lost War
"The senior Bush, first as vice-president, then as president,
continued to pursue a U.S. policy of drug intervention, sometimes
declaring victory, often claiming great inroads in the war. We all know
this was balderdash. We were losing the war then; we are losing the war
now. Drugs are as attainable as bubble gum. We have become involved in
sending our military and our covert agencies into harm's way in countries
such as Columbia and Peru, and have very little to show for it other than
others' nationalistic acrimony."
- Columnist Howard Kleinberg, Cox Newspapers

Right Gives Bush's Fed-Ed Plan an "F"
"Three months into what was supposed to be a bipartisan effort to
overhaul
the public schools, Mr. Bush is losing support from both wings of his
party,
with conservatives especially complaining. 'This is not where I thought we
would be going with Republicans in control in the House, the Senate and
the
White House,' says GOP Rep. Peter Hoekstra of Michigan. ... (R)epublicans
fear that the president's plan expands the federal role in education by
prescribing how schools must improve. Even more, they worry that his call
for testing could lead to a national curriculum, which is an
over-my-dead-body issue for conservatives. 'Our guy the president is
promoting a bill to expand the size and scope of the Department of
Education,' Rep. Bob Schaffer, a Colorado Republican, say
incredulously."
