Liberty Watch - April 17, 2000
"Those that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little
temporary safety deserve
neither liberty nor safety." - Ben Franklin

Reagan on Conversative vs. Libertarian
"I believe the very heart and soul of
conservatism is libertarianism. ... The
basis of conservatism is a desire for less
government interference or less centralized authority or more individual
freedom, and this is a pretty general description also of what
libertarianism is." - Ronald Reagan

It's All About Liberty
"To be a libertarian is to believe that
human liberty ought to be greatly
increased. To be a libertarian is to
believe that human liberty is the paramount goal of government."
- R.W. Bradford, editor and publisher
of "Liberty" magazine, May 2001

Nightmare Scenario
"One of the main reasons I'm back in the
Republican Party is that if Libertarian
presidential candidate Harry Browne had done as well as Ralph Nader, we'd
have President Gore today."
- New RLC member and former Nevada
Libertarian Party Chairman Terry Savage,
4/4/01

Sabrin Mulls NJ Senate Bid
"Ramapo College economics professor and conservative Republican
Murray Sabrin used Monday's tax-filing deadline to announce the formation
of an exploratory committee for the U.S. Senate race in 2002. Sabrin, who
favors less government and fewer taxes, is eyeing a run in next year's
Republican
primary for the seat now held by Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Torricelli.
"A former Libertarian, Sabrin now serves as vice chairman of the
Republican Liberty Caucus, libertarians affiliated with the GOP. If he
enters the race, it will be his second bid for a Senate seat.
" . This time, Sabrin vowed to build a
coalition of support among conservative
Republicans and independents and blue-
collar, Reagan Democrats. 'The theme of any potential campaign will be
based upon three principles,' he said. 'Strong families, free enterprise
and individual freedom.'
" . Sabrin favors exempting income from a second or third job -- as
well as the lower income from two-income families -- from federal and
payroll taxes. He also favors a reduction in federal income and capital
gains taxes and wants to abolish estate taxes. . Sabrin supports privately
funded retirement accounts to replace Social Security. He wants to give
tax credits for donations to non-profit organizations, and he favors
elimination of federal and state education bureaucracies."

Goldwater Republicans: From Extreme to
Mainstream
"Lincoln Chafee was 11 years old when his dad took him to the 1964
Republican
convention. There, the New England lad
discovered a new side of the Republican
Party: the conservative Barry Goldwater
delegates who booed New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller off the stage,"
Wall Street Journal reporter Shailagh Murray writes.
"'The fervency,´ remembers Mr. Chafee, a proud moderate like his
father, the late
Sen. John Chafee. 'I'd never seen anything like it.´
"The gap remains just as great today but
suddenly it matters a lot more in a Senate
that is split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans. Mr. Chafee is now
the junior senator from Rhode Island, and his
opposition to President Bush's tax cut has been decisive in forcing the
Senate to scale it back by almost half a trillion dollars," the
reporter said.
"Those Goldwater delegates and their
successors now form the Republican Party's mainstream and they aren't
happy. Since the tax vote, they have inundated the junior Rhode Island
senator with a torrent of phone calls. 'Are you an idiot, or are you a
Democrat,´ one unidentified caller shouts."
- Greg Pierce's "Inside Politics," 4/17/01

Whatever You Call It, It's Me
"I knew that the only way for people who are religious conservative
in their lives to
make a difference in the lives and souls of the multitudes of the
suffering people in this country was for government to get out of the way,
out of their lives, out of their business(es), and out of their wallets,
but I didn't know how to describe that.
"Luckily, a couple of friends from my
College Republicans days were telling me about the Republican Liberty
Caucus and the nature of Republican libertarianism. It still wasn't
precisely what I believed...but I knew it was as close as I could get. I
had a label, I had a cause, and I had a new organization in which to
forward my ideals.
"So, I tell people now that I'm libertarian
because I'm a conservative. Confusing at
first? Yes. But it opens up a conversation
about the ideals of politics and what our
country and government should be. And
that's what it's all about."
- Adam J. Bernay, California
