THIS WEEK'S LINKS

1-----1-----1

In "Teaching the Virtues" Professor Christina Hoff Sommers expounds on the flaws of values clarification. Can virtue be taught? Sommers says yes, yet misses
who the primary teachers of virtue must be...

Kathleen Melonakos reminds us that despite all our modern technology--and our modern hubris--the experiences and wisdom of the Ancients is worthy of
our attention. See why in her "Ideas on Liberty" article, "Lessons for American Education from the Ancient Greeks."

How can $450 million disappear? Down the education rat hole courtesy of Uncle Sam, of course. Dave Mundy give us "Yet another reason to axe the Education
Department," an excellent incremental step to separation of school and state.

What are Charters for? Crowding out private schools, apparently. Proponents of school "choice" should consider
the unintended consequences of their pet schemes on the few private schools left. John Tarka, director of the Pennsylvania
Federation of Teachers claims that 30% of Philadelphia's charter school students came from private schools. In that city, most of those students likely came from
Catholic schools.

Cracks in the Edifice: $60M per year for more shrinks in schools California Superintendent of Schools Delaine Eastin
appeared in the state assembly to beg for money to nearly double the number school counselors. "Children have too few [adult] people they can go to [to] converse and to connect," says Eastin, without a hint of irony. (Could forcibly taking children away from their parents
and out of their communities, and enrolling them in schools of several thousand students have anything to
do with this failure to connect?--Ed.) Note how much money was spent after Columbine and how little good it did
the Santana High victims. (Copy and paste long urls into

EduAbsurdity: Do as I Say...
In what seems to be school officials' never ending quest for the almighty dollar, Springfield High (Fairfax, Virginia) principal David Smith had 47 students rounded up to forge their parents'
signatures on Impact Aid survey forms. Student newspaper broke the story. Says Smith, it was a mistake that would not be repeated... (Asking for the forgeries or getting caught, Dave? --Ed.)
