ABC News and
20/20 correspondent, John Stossel, will be speaking at Capital University
on Monday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mees Hall Auditorium. The lecture
is free and open to all students, faculty,
staff, and the public-at-large.
Stossel, a winner of 19 Emmy awards, is known for his "Gimme a
Break" segments on 20/20 and his various hour-long TV specials such
as "Greed," "Is America Number 1?," "Sex, Drugs
and Consenting Adults," and "Are We Scaring Ourselves to
Death?," among others. He is clearly the most libertarian member of
the mainstream media.
His lecture topic is "Pandering to Fear: The Media's Crisis
Mentality." Every day, newspapers and television warn us of new
dangers in our complex modern world. With the world apparently getting
more dangerous all the time, we have to wonder how life expectancy keeps
on growing. John Stossel will explore the real risks in modern life, why
the media hypes unrealistic fears, and why readers and viewers fall for
it.
