Upcoming Vote on S.27, the McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform Bill
Action Needed: Email, phone, or fax your senators immediately in
opposition to the McCain-Feingold bill and any other bills, such as Chuck
Hagel's S.22 Open and Accountable Campaign Financing Act of
2001, which abridge our God-given freedom of speech.
Status: On March 19th the Senate began two weeks of debate on S.27. A vote
is likely by the end of March or early April.
Summary: "McCain-Feingold campaign finance legislation would regulate
political speech by ordinary citizens, yet allow the
major media to 'report' political news with any bias they choose. The
dangerous McCain-Feingold 'Campaign Finance' legislation is on the
legislative fast track despite the fact that it is designed to make an end
run around the First Amendment. The bill would place the most basic
organized expression of political opinion under strict federal
regulatory controls. These controls would be similar to the reporting
requirements, disclosure rules, and contribution limits
required of federal candidates' campaign committees, and would put a
serious chill on free expression in the United States."
