Reformers Update:
Bennett's online educator, K12, charts first charter
----------
William J. Bennett's Virginia-based education company, K12, has won
approval to manage its first virtual charter school in Norristown. The
district's action gives K12 a toehold in the rapidly expanding
charter-school management sector. (2/14/01)

Homeschoolers: wear this badge or be interrogated
----------
by Kimberly Moore
As Dr. Seuss wrote, "The time has come, the time is now." The
place? Somerset, England. It seems that in a nationwide effort to combat
truancy, someone came up with the bright idea of ferreting out home
educators in order to show that they were not truants. Yes, this is a
proposal that has been made. (01/31/01)

More harassment of homeschoolers: Kentucky judge orders teen to public
school, or else
----------
by Mark Cowan
The mother of a 13-year-old Kentucky girl is under threat of jail if the
child has even one unexcused absence from school. The case pits a judge
against a mother's desire to homeschool. The judge ordered the mother
arrested and the child taken into state custody if even one day of school
was missed without a doctor's
excuse. (02/08/01)

Sante Fe district may obstruct charter school opening
----------
Santa Fe school board Vice President Robert Ochoa said he thinks regular
schools given proper resources can eliminate the need for charter schools.
"We don't need charter schools," he said.
"Charter schools are a big hype." (02/10/01)

Believe it or don't: Ohio teachers' union wants to run a charter school
----------
by Reginald Fields
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em? Tired of seeing students and money flow
to upstart entrepreneurs running charter schools, the Akron teachers'
union is planning to start its own publicly funded,
privately run high school. If the school becomes a reality, the Akron
Education Association will operate the only union-run
charter school in Ohio and possibly the country. (02/08/01)

A 20-year principal finds charter school refreshing
----------
by Sandy Coleman
Robert Martin had a distinct distaste for charter schools. As a Boston
school principal for nearly 20 years, he saw them as a veiled attack on
public education, stealing resources and top students, and creating a
two-tiered education system. Now that he's had a freedom to act he never
enjoyed before, he has changed his mind. (02/12/01)

To permit time for debate, NYC delays charter school vote
----------
by Edward Wyatt
To give Edison Schools a chance to combat the concerted opposition of the
teachers' unions, Schools Chancellor Harold O. Levy said that he would
delay by two weeks a scheduled vote by parents of children at five
low-performing New York City public schools on whether to allow private
management. (02/09/01)

Homeschooling is becoming more popular
----------
by Bruce Kauffman
Some parents "don't necessarily want children to be confined to a
certain kind of thinking." Still others believe government
should not be involved in shaping the minds of their children.

claim that "homeschooling is one of the fastest
growing areas of public [sic] education." (02/10/01)

Should teachers control schools?
----------
by Myron Lieberman
With the growth of charter schools, why aren't more teachers establishing
charter schools? Such schools are supposed to be free of most bureaucratic
regulation as long as they can show improvement in student achievement.
This is precisely what teachers claim they could do if bureaucratic
restrictions were eliminated. (02/12/01)

Minorities follow choice to Catholic schools
----------
Milwaukee's Catholic schools have attracted a more diverse group of
students through their participation in the city's school choice program,
an archdiocese report says, with 78% of choice students representing
racial minorities. (02/08/01)

Vouching for Bush
----------
by Darcy Ann Olsen
"The real merit of the Bush [education] plan isn't the plan itself,
but that it has launched a national debate about parental
control in education. Let state and local legislators take it from
here." (01/25/01)

V-day for Vouchers?
----------
by Pete du Pont
For there to be any real accountability for the schools that consistently
fail -- even when they are blessed with increased
flexibility and additional resources -- parents must be empowered to say,
"No, you're not going to fail my child any
longer." That means giving them a choice. (2/7/01)

Distorting the school choice issue
----------
by Tibor R. Machan
Vouchers were always about taking -- admittedly somewhat risky -- steps in
the direction of wider choice in primary and secondary education. The
problem was and still is that government has such
a lock on education throughout the USA that it is nearly impossible to
wrest the institution from it. (01/01/01)
