Dear
homeschooling friends:
I am responding to Robin's posting about the brochure she got for internet
learning from JCPS.
You are going to see more and more of this type thing in the future, and
this is one of the very issues that KHEA will address in its seminars for
support group leaders on March 17 (Hopkinsville) and March 24 (Lexington).
The "face" of homeschoolers is going to change, and many
newcomers will not have the same calling that most of us share.
Consequently, they will accept "freebies" from the government (aka
public schools); anything from computers and software to curricula.
Government gifts do not come without strings attached. Please be careful
when you make these decisions; this is a very slippery slope. In the case
of this "oversight" of a homeschool student's work (email
submissions for review), there may be no actual exchange of something of
monetary value. It concerns me, however, because some administrators and
teachers have a tendency to be overzealous -- e.g., what if they don't
feel that your child is writing as well as he should? or what if they
don't like the content?
Please urge your support group leaders to attend one of our seminars, so
that they may bring the information back to you! These are very important
issues which will affect all homeschoolers.
Thanks,
Mary Anna Rogers
