Dear Fellow
School Reformer,
There's more fallout this week on the president's warm and fuzzy federal
plan to revamp education. As ever, it will mostly be up to local folks to
enact genuine school reform. Probably the best
thing the feds can do is just -- get the heck out of the way. (We'll keep
our fingers crossed.)
The ultimate do-it-yourself school reform is, of course, to opt out of the
system entirely: teach your kids yourself. That means a lot of freedom, as
well as a lot of challenging responsibility. In the past, homeschoolers
have sometimes found that their experience can be an isolating one. But as
the movement grows and broadens, and the technology of community advances
as well, it's getting easier to get advice and a pat on the back from
other parents and students in the trenches.
One often-overlooked resource is email discussion groups. We've listed a
few devoted to homeschooling that are housed by the easy-to-use "egroups"
web site. We don't vouch for any particular list. High traffic and high
number of subscribers is often a sign of robust discussion; on the other
hand, some
struggling lists just need a few more participants to really get cooking.
If you want to give this option a try, it's probably best to sign up with
a bunch and see which ones are the most helpful. It's easy to unsubscribe
from the duds. Egroups lets you receive email from your lists or click
into the egroups site to check postings.
As far as hobnobbing about school choice in general, don't forget our own SchoolReformers.com
bulletin board. There you can sound off on the latest news and views and
set the rest
of us straight.
Yours for school choice,
