LP "Big Chief" Switches Parties
Terry Savage, a long-time and highly-respected leader of the Libertarian
Party, has resigned his position as LP state chairman of Nevada and
re-registered as a Republican. In making the switch, Savage said, "As
a Republican, I look forward to new and expanded opportunities to promote
my core values of small government and personal freedom." After LP
presidential candidate Harry Browne's dismal and embarrassing showing last
year ... combined with the fact that the LP won a measly total of 15 races
nationwide (all for local seats such as planning boards and public utility
districts) ... more and more Libertarian's are coming to the conclusion
that the only realistic way to advance the
limited-government/personal-liberty
agenda is within the GOP. Savage has volunteered to organize a Republican
Liberty Caucus chapter in Reno, Nevada. Welcome home, Terry!

RLC: The Cure for What Ails the LP
"For 28 years, libertarians have invested tens of millions of dollars
and uncounted thousands of hours of hard work running candidates for
elective office. What dividends has this investment paid? Virtually none:
the highest office any Libertarian Party candidate has ever won in a
partisan race is state representative, a position the party has won in
only two small states, Alaska and New Hampshire, and has been unable to
hold.
"Worse still, libertarian impact on the nation's political agenda has
been negligible. The power of the state continues to grow unchecked, and
libertarians aren't even part of the debate. It should now be clear to
every libertarian that running candidates for president and other elective
offices is not an effective use of our resources. It's time for the LP to
take stock of its assets and liabilities and see whether it can find a way
to be effective. There's no reason to throw good money at an enterprise
that has never succeeded."

Come On In, The Water's Fine
"So, while many activities need the help of libertarians, if politics
is your main game, I suggest you consider (joining) the Republican Party.
It needs libertarians desperately. No, it would not be as much fun as the
Libertarian Party. You would have to rub shoulders with, and even endorse,
conservative country clubbers and moderate would-be regulators. You would
be in the minority. You would have to compromise. But you could have an
impact on the course of this country's future. And if you look hard, you
may find some libertarians there already."
- Columnist Jane S. Shaw, "Liberty," February 2001

Welcome Another Wee-Publican
Speaking of John Reed, he and his wife brought another champion of liberty
into the fold with the birth of John Ezra Reed II. Baby John debuted at
2:53 p.m. on January 16, 2001 and weighed in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces.
Congrats all around to the Reed family from the Republican Liberty Caucus
family.

PA RLC Sets Sites on Target
Pennsylvania State Liberty Caucus Chairman David Kamioner held a strategic
and organizational meeting in Philadelphia last week. The group decided to
target and focus their energies on electing one liberty-minded Republican
in an open state legislative primary race next year ... which would afford
the organization "the most pack for our political punch."
"We also agreed to meet once every other month and to try and bring
one more person a piece to the next meeting in March," reports
Chairman Kamioner. "Our goal: By this time next year to have at least
15-20 trained people to deploy to the above-mentioned race to give our
candidate an advantage going into election day." Bravo!
