Letter from John Riley in response to C-J’s editorial:

"Well, there you go again." Your editorial "Seum's crusade against VET", is no more than petty propaganda about the issue.
You can not discuss the facts about the VET so you resort to attacking Dan Seum in an attempt to scare the Kentucky State Legislature into thinking we will lose Federal Funding if we end a program that is no longer useful or needed.

Most people want "clean air" as I do; however, it is the result of
technology and efficiency in cars and NOT VET testing that can take credit for cleaner air in our communities. Fewer and fewer of the older "polluting" cars are on the road today and are being driven less and less as newer cars come on the market. That's not because of the VET. The elderly person who only drives their older car to the grocery and/or church and back can hardly be held out as a major polluter of our communities.
The technology for even cleaner cars is continuing to discredit your position which appears to be to ignore the facts, keep the VET, give your cash to Gordon Darby, and while we're at it lets expand the program into rural Kentucky. Oh, and at the same time we can attack Dan Seum and not mention the many other respected legislators who agree with him on this issue.

I hope the Legislature and our Governor are smart enough to follow Florida and Minnesota who have already ended VET testing. The threat of losing Federal funding by ending an increasingly useless program is no longer going to be a tool of the Federal Government. It is a new day and we now have a new administration to oversee the EPA. So, lets all breath easier and get rid of VET testing as well as the MTBE reformulated gas that
pollutes our ground water.
