A few thoughts

by Theresa Camoriano

Mandy Connell had a phone call from “Max” the liberal Teamster member who is shocked about the taxes he will have to pay under Obamacare and the intrusion into his private life.  He says his Cadillac health insurance plan is none of the government’s business!  He can’t believe what is happening to him.  It just can’t be true!  If you want to get a good chuckle to hear Max as he begins to see the light, go here.

In the wake of Justice Roberts’ opinion that the penalty for not buying health insurance is a tax, it should be noted that most of the taxes we pay are penalties.   People who work hard, create wealth, and live prudently are forced to bail out those who don’t.  The current system creates all the wrong incentives and is just the opposite of justice.  In short, it is a penalty on the good guys.

Kentucky lawmakers have voted themselves pensions that are nothing short of highway robbery.  They include provisions that create windfall profits for many elected officials.  This would be a major scandal if more people understood what has happened.  The entire public employee pension system is creating a huge financial commitment that is hidden from the public and is bankrupting the state.  It must be stopped.  Every person running for public office should be required to commit that he or she will vote to convert all pensions for new employees to a defined contribution arrangement in which the pension contribution from the state is paid for up front in each paycheck and there are no hidden liabilities and no hidden windfalls.  And the law should treat all elected officials as being new employees upon their next election and every person who signs a new employment contract as a new employee going forward, so we can put an end to this nonsense as quickly as possible.

In a properly functioning, free society, people seek to act in accordance with wisdom and virtue and thereby are largely self-governing, and laws are used only to prevent behaviors such as murder, theft and fraud.  Unfortunately, in our society today, people are losing the ability to govern themselves.  They rarely ask whether something is wise or virtuous but instead ask whether it is legal.  As a result, we get more and more laws micromanaging our behavior and we become less and less free.

A recent article explains why every school in America should teach entrepreneurship.  Entrepreneurship education consistently brings children raised in poverty into the middle class, inspires them to continue their education, and empowers them to take charge of their own lives and create wealth.  What are we waiting for?
