Beware the Language of the Left

By Theresa Camoriano

The truth is a very powerful weapon, and it is on our side.  All we need to do is to learn how to use it.

Do you remember near the end of the Wizard of Oz, when the little dog Toto pulled back the curtain and revealed that “the Great and Powerful Oz” was nothing more than a little man pulling levers that controlled flashing lights, smoke and mirrors?  As soon as the truth was revealed, the scam was over.  There was no more “Great and Powerful Oz.”

Do you remember the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes?  All the townspeople marveled at the emperor’s beautiful new clothes until a little child pointed out that the emperor was not wearing any clothes.  Suddenly, everyone realized that the emperor was naked, and everyone was very embarrassed.

If you will pay close attention, you will find that the left has to hide the truth in order to promote its agenda, so it often twists the meaning of words in order to trick and confuse people.

All we have to do is to be like Toto and pull back the curtain or be like the little child and speak the truth, and we will win.  We don’t have to be mean and obnoxious.  We just need to be clear and persistent and not permit the tricks and confusion to continue.

So, for example, when Sandra Fluke says that Republicans want to deny her access to birth control pills, we need to point out that she has changed the meaning of the word “access”.  In plain English, “access” means that you can get something or get to something.  Since nobody is proposing to prevent her from going to the pharmacy to buy birth control pills, then nobody is proposing to deny her access to birth control pills.  So she must mean something else when when uses the word “access”.  We should ask out loud why is she changing the normal meaning of the word unless her goal is to trick and confuse people?  Then we should ask what does she really mean when she says “access”?   Her definition of “access”  seems to be that something is provided to her and paid for by somebody else.  So, using her meaning, she also is being denied access to food, since she has to go to the store and pay for it with her own money.

Then, once the scam is revealed, we can identify the real issue and deal with it.

The word “access” is just one of many words that are being twisted by the left in order to try to confuse people and play on their emotions.  We have a whole “definitions” section in Jefferson Review that is devoted to pointing out the left’s new definitions of words such as: Addiction to [fill in the blank], Civility, Corporation, Distribution of wealth, Fairness, Freedom of Speech, Gift, “Hate speech”, Hypocrite, Invest, Judicial Activism, People over profits, Political correctness, Public Service, Right to housing, health care, etc.,“Social justice”, Special Interests, and Unfair profits.

I encourage you to read those definitions, to clarify in your own mind how people are twisting those words to try to trick us, and then to do everything you can to pull back the curtain and make people aware of how they are being misled and confused by this twisting of words.  You should insist that the conventional meaning of words be used, or else that the new definitions be expressly stated so the meaning will be clear and people will not be confused.

When Nancy Pelosi said she was giving us the “gift” of Obamacare, she surely wasn’t using the traditional meaning of the word “gift”.  Why did she use that word?  What did she really mean?

When people on the left talk about the “distribution of wealth”, they speak as if there were some magical wealth machine with some imaginary person handing out the wealth coming out of that machine, and they want that wealth to be handed out or distributed evenly to everyone.  But that kind of language creates a misleading fantasy that can only serve to confuse people.  Wealth is not produced from a magical machine. It is produced by people who work hard and use resources wisely to serve other people, and the harder they work and the more they produce, the wealthier they become.  When you realize the reality of how wealth is produced, then you realize that the idea of “distributing it evenly” is crazy.  It would mean that a person who has not done the work to produce the wealth would be able to simply take it from the person who has worked to produce it.

How about the phrase “people over profits”?  It sounds good, but what does it really mean?  If there are no profits, then the people will starve to death.

If we want to return sanity to our world, then we have to keep speaking the truth, keep pulling back the curtain, keep insisting that issues be dealt with clearly and plainly, without the spin and trickery.  We must not tolerate the lies and deception.

Little Toto was the hero of the story in the Wizard of Oz.  He didn’t have to growl or bare his teeth.  He just had to persist in sniffing out the truth and pulling back the curtain to reveal the truth to everyone.

And that’s our job, too.

So let’s grab a nice doggie treat, wag our tails, and get started sniffing out the truth and pulling back the curtains!
