John Yarmuth Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Further Restrict Our Freedom of Speech

By Theresa Camoriano

John Yarmuth says there is too much corrupting influence by corporations on members of Congress, and in order to remedy this corruption, we need a constitutional amendment to restrict the freedom of speech of corporations.

Essentially, Yarmuth is telling us that, instead of restricting the activities of the members of Congress who are corrupt, we should restrict the freedom of speech of all honest American citizens.  Talk about a “blame the victim” mentality!

The Americans whose freedom of speech would be further restricted by Yarmuth’s amendment to the Constitution would include concerned citizens who pool their money in order to be able to speak out about issues and candidates, such as the members of Right to Life, Gun Owners of America, Tea party organizations, and Taxpayers United.

Of course, Yarmuth and other Washington insiders enjoy their positions of power and want to silence anyone who attempts to shine a light on their activities and hold them accountable to the people.  They already have passed many campaign finance laws that frighten most people with the threat of prosecution, fines, and imprisonment if they dare to speak out, but still the 1st Amendment to the Constitution prevents them from completely silencing their critics.  How inconvenient for the elitist insiders like Yarmuth, who cannot tolerate the “little people” speaking “truth to power”.

The mainstream media today are not performing their intended function of shining a light on corruption and holding politicians accountable to the people.  Instead, they have become part of the elitist insiders group.  So, it is left to the people, joining their resources together in the form of corporations, to speak out against the corruption and to hold the government accountable.  And that is what Yarmuth and his friends want to prevent.

We, the people, should not have fewer rights than the corporations who own the newspapers and the radio and television stations, but that is currently the case.  The media corporations are free to promote their views and their candidates at any time, without the need to file reports with the government and without other restrictions, but if we try to organize ourselves into corporations in order to push back against a corrupt, overbearing government, we are required to file detailed reports and to live in fear that we will be harassed, prosecuted, fined, or imprisoned under the campaign finance laws.

Not only should we not allow Yarmuth to pull the wool over our eyes and further restrict our freedom of speech, but we should demand that the freedoms already stripped away from us be restored.

If you care about the freedom of speech and the right of the people to criticize the government and hold it accountable, then please write your elected officials and demand that they pass a law restoring the rights of Americans so we have at least as great a freedom to pool our resources and speak out as any newspaper or other media corporation.
