It’s Time to Do Your Part to Get Good Candidates Elected
By Theresa Camoriano
We are very fortunate in this election cycle to have some excellent candidates running for office and for those candidates to have an excellent chance of winning. In our local area, we have the opportunity to support Rand Paul for U.S. Senate, Todd Lally for U.S. Congress, and Hal Heiner for Mayor. They are all quality people, who do not think it is their job to tell you how to run your life and who understand how a large, intrusive government crushes the human spirit. They are dedicated to working toward a limited government that respects every individual and allows each person to pursue his own happiness in his own way. By respecting every individual and allowing each person to flourish, this type of government also promotes peace and prosperity, which are sorely needed these days. If these people are willing to sacrifice their time and money and to take the abuse that often goes along with running for office, then we should appreciate their efforts, and, for our own sake and the sake of future generations, we should do what we can to help them get elected.
Whether we like it or not, we live in the real world, where it takes money to get a message out. If a candidate cannot afford TV and radio advertising, he or she cannot win an election. If we want a government that is responsive to the average people, then the average people have to make financial contributions to good candidates to help them get their message out and get elected. And the earlier we make our donations, the better, as the candidates need to make commitments now to buy advertising time leading up to the election. In national elections, early contributions from local people also can show that there is local support and can stimulate more contributions from the national party and from freedom-oriented groups. So it is important for us to contribute to local candidates. Go to their websites to get their addresses and mail them a check or use a credit card to donate on-line. (See Heiner’s donation page, Lally’s donation page, and Paul’s donation page.)
We need to put our money where our mouths are. Otherwise, we have no room to complain as the government grows ever larger and more intrusive. Elected officials tend to “dance with the one that brung ya”, and that needs to be we, the people, not the large corporations, George Soros, or union bosses. If a good candidate is willing to really represent the people, then the people need to really support that candidate. We need to be willing to give up a few restaurant dinners and a few fancy coffees and send that money to a good candidate. It is a very small sacrifice — time for us to put up or shut up.
In addition to giving money, we can give our time volunteering to do whatever the campaign wants us to do, whether it is walking neighborhoods or making phone calls. We also should let other people know about our candidates and why they should support them.
Our country is at a crossroads, and this election will determine which direction we will go. Will we continue on the current path, which leads to dependency on the hollow promises from a government that is going bankrupt, or will we change direction and restore individual liberty and responsibility, weaning our people off of their dependency and returning to the path of self-respect and empowerment?
No person can do it alone. It will take large numbers of people willing to stand up and be counted. I hope you will be one of them and will recruit others as well. You have the opportunity to be a part of restoring the American dream for millions of Americans and people throughout the world. May the force be with you!
