Your Liberty is Our Interest

Jeff Smith letter on Lexington KY water utility

Ronald Henry writes, (“Remember the water debate” 5-5-2010), complaining about a rate hike by Kentucky American Water. Moving past the obvious reasons for rate hikes which include increased costs, urban expansion, taxes, and burdensome government regulations, just what is it that makes people naively believe government ownership of production magically creates rates that do not increase?

Do people not see that Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and all the other government run “businesses” are bankrupt, inefficient, and lack responsiveness?

The US Postal Service loses over $40,000,000,000.00 per year as a government run and subsidized “business”. Even with that loss, which is picked up by taxpayers elsewhere on the government’s accounting spreadsheets, postal rates continue to rise.

Maybe when our government run schools stopped teaching the principles of capitalism and the truth about socialism and Marxism, people began to lose their understanding of the prosperity and Liberty the free market has imparted. Maybe it is time for people to seek real knowledge over entertainment. Then again, maybe it is easier to believe in magic.

Remember the water debate

When we residents had the opportunity to own Kentucky American Water years ago, we blew it. KAW President Nick Rowe and his cronies are laughing at us.

This is going to play a big role in my vote for mayor. I still have my sign, “Own the Water Company.”

KAW has already raised rates; my last billing was $30 higher in April than in March. I believe the Public Service Commission is supporting this bad decision to seek another increase.

Think about the citizens when voting for mayor and other offices. Consider what agenda politicians truly have.
