Grayson ducks debates

From the Rand Paul Campaign

Louisville, KY: This Saturday, March 13, Rand Paul was on hand to speak to the activists at the Louisville Tea Party, accepting an invitation that had been extended to the major U.S. Senate candidates.

Rand Paul was, however, the only front-running candidate who made an appearance before the Tea Party, as his opponent Trey Grayson declined to appear at this important event.

Since the event was sponsored by the grassroots activists seeking to take back our government from big spending career politicians, it’s little wonder Trey Grayson didn’t show — though it’s still disappointing.

“I went there to tell the Tea Party activists why my platform of term limits, balanced budget amendment, an end to earmarks, a strong pro-life platform and a robust national defense will carry us to victory in November,” Rand said. “It’s time to send a message to Washington D.C.  We don’t want more establishment career politicians who give lip service and little else. It’s time to send a true conservative activist to Washington who understands what is at stake.”

This isn’t the first time Trey Greyson has failed to appear before a crowd of activists. He was invited in November to the University of Kentucky but failed to show, instead angering the crowd by attempting, literally, to phone in his appearance. University of Louisville College Republicans held a debate in January without Grayson, who flatly refused to attend at any time.

This pattern of ignoring conservative activists and not standing up for real reform like term limits and earmark reform is clearly manifesting itself in the polls, which show Rand Paul ahead by fifteen points or more.

Ironically, it appears Mr. Grayson is attacking Rand Paul for not debating at one particular upcoming forum. Rand is happy to appear at any forum that fits his schedule and that involves reasonable ground rules.

Also, Grayson’s campaign sent a volunteer in a chicken suit to disrupt a Republican event Rand was hosting outside Congressman Ben Chandler’s office on Friday. The purpose of the event, featuring Rand and each of the Republicans running against Chandler, was to show united opposition to the nationalized healthcare scheme in Congress.

“It’s really shocking to see the continued desperation, mudslinging, and now, downright childish silliness of my opponent,” Rand said. “If Trey wants his race to be run on lies, distortions and chicken suits, I guess that’s up to him. But I plan to make mine about term limits, balanced budgets, and an end to earmarks, promoting our pro-life values and a strong national defense. Which one sounds more like a platform for Kentucky’s next Senator?”
