Subject: REAL-TIME UPDATE: Alerts and Proceedings from Frankfort

Greetings!

I have been busy today, so no time to update during lunch. Thank you all for your calls on HB 491, the Carbon Storage bill. This morning I was able to testify on this bill, providing a complete markup of its original language to each member of the committee. The arguments made in favor of the bill did not have as much to do with the content of the bill as it did with the idea behind the entire bill. Therefore, the chair decided to go into “over-time” and listen to extra testimony. He also avoided a vote, and asked the committee whether they would help him fight against all of this or whether they wanted to give in. Apparently he has been saying the same things as me for a long time and he’s wearing down. We can be a great encouragement to him and some other friendly committee members by giving them support and a hearty thank-you.

For: Rep. Jim Gooch, Rep. Tim Couch, Rep. Stan Lee, Rep. Don Pasley

Bill: HB 491—oppose

Message: Keep up the fight against bad CO2 bills! We appreciate and support your efforts!

My other main focus today was gathering support for the Real ID resolution, SJR 109. Thank you for your calls. There is a major effort needed to make sure this happens, but the information is getting out, people are paying attention, and the best news is that I’m sitting in the Senate today and they have called it out of committee for the first reading. Usually this is the method they use when the leadership wants to move a bill through quickly. We are still wondering whether the leadership will allow this one to come through, so it is at least an interesting development to take not of. Also, John Schickel has agreed to setp out and be the first Republican to co-sponsor the taboo-democrat-sponsored legislation. So perhaps other Republicans will follow soon. You can call these people to encourage them once Sen. Schickel’s name comes out on the list.

For: Senate Republicans

Bill: SJR 109—support

Message: Please co-sponsor so this moves through the Senate quickly.

We also tried to catch HB 101 on County Ordinances in the committee, but no discussion was going to happen. We will need to kill this on the House floor. This bill was dormant for several weeks, but it has risen to life and could be on the fast-track.

For: My Representative, House Leadership

Bill: HB 101—oppose

Message: Shortcutting the process only shortcuts the public’s time to get involved. Vote for the people and just say no.

The prohibition bill, SB 107, which you have been calling on, was planned to come up today in committee, but for some reason it was not on the agenda, so it is stuck at least for a moment. If anyone is watching the chamber proceedings in the House, please take not of special meeting announcements for the Judiciary committee. We need all ears when they make their announcements so we can get in on any secret meetings that may come up in case this one goes underground.

We learned about an interesting campaign finance bill today in the Republican Caucus, which we suspect could possibly include the media exemption we’ve had trouble with for years. You will recall last year’s SB 62 and the previous year’s SB 8. It is tagged onto HB 288, so we will comb through that and find it if it’s there. If so, we will need ALL HANDS ON DECK because there will be major emergency action needed. If it needs to be stopped, we are at the VERY LAST stage of the game to do it.

There are only a couple more weeks left, so be prepared for more emergancy action. BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has been calling, those who came yesterday, and those who have been reading bills and keeping up with the committees. If you want to be invovled more in the legislation or at the capitol, never hesitate to ask me questions. I can get you plugged in anywhere you want. The more, the merrier.  (And the better for our freedom. We are always severely under-staffed.)

Forward for Freedom,

Adrienne Gilbert
