The Courier-Journal, and even some Republicans, seem to be surprised that Rand Paul has been able to attract such a diverse group of supporters — from young people with tattoos to conservative Baptist ministers. However, it really should come as no surprise, because it is a natural consequence of his support for individual liberty and his belief that the government should respect the life, liberty and property of every single person and operate within the limits of the Constitution.
When the government treats people with respect instead of trying to control their lives and ram things down their throats, and when it sticks to its basic functions, then people with many different lifestyles and beliefs can live together peacefully and cooperate for their mutual benefit. That is what has enabled America to be a place of tolerance, opportunity, and security in the past, and it can work again. It is time for us to take our country back, and we can do it if we elect people like Rand Paul.
