Increasing the compulsory age for school attendance from 16 to 18 years of age has a number of critical problems:
- It will cost the state untold amounts of additional money, which will have to be collected from taxpayers. Kentucky already has a significant budget deficit, so legislators should be looking for ways to save, not spend more.
- Extended compulsory schooltime has not been shown to improve overall “education” of a given population.
- It will try to force older teenagers into a situation that they may not want to be in and some of these unwilling students may disrupt classroom proceedings, disturbing those who want to be there to learn, as well as putting additional behavior management burdens on the teacher.
- It violates principles of freedom and personal choice that are inherent to a free society. You cannot MAKE someone learn.
- This is most likely a ploy to get more warm bodies in the seats to get more Federal money – which only puts KY on the hook to the Federal government and allows the Federal government to control KY schools.
