This Week in History

(from Dr. Mardy’s quotes)

On January 17, 1942, Muhammad Ali was born (as Cassius Clay) in
Louisville, Kentucky.  He burst on the sporting scene in 1960 by winning a
gold medal in the Rome Olympics.  After defeating Sonny Liston in 1964 to
win the heavyweight title, he became a Black Muslim and changed his name
to Muhammad Ali.  His title was stripped after he refused military service
in Vietnam (it was restored in 1970 when the U. S. Supreme Court
overturned his conviction).  The first boxer in history to win the
heavyweight championship three separate times, Ali was one of history’s
most articulate athletes,

But he was once overpowered in the verbal arena
by an exceptionally witty opponent.  Sitting one day in the first-class
cabin of a jet about to take off, Ali was asked by a fight attendant to
fasten his seat belt.  In his inimitable fashion, Ali said grandly,
“Superman don’t need no seat belt.”  The quick-thinking flight attendant
immediately replied:

“Superman don’t need no airplane, either.”
